Thirteen-year-old Daniel's "secret talent" starts small: a bonsai that bends when he asks. He tells himself it's nothing—until skeletal hunters begin tracking his family on what should have been a normal vacation to Nepal. Then a skeletal woman appears outside their airplane window at 30,000 feet, and Daniel's dad finally admits why they're being hunted.

Thirteen years ago, Daniel's mother fled another world to Earth before it fell. She was murdered in Atlanta by that same hunter: Estrella. Estrella serves a corrupted Master who helped forge the Sacred Torc, then betrayed the others and destroyed that world to claim its power.

Daniel, his twin sister Erica, and their father race through Kathmandu with hunters closing in, then escape by plunging into a waterfall that hides a portal into the mountains. On the other side, refugees survive in a settlement carved into three peaks. Daniel bears the Torc imprint, but it's unstable—he has less than two days to train and be ready before it turns lethal. The only way to save him is to find the missing Ivory Blades needed to properly set the Sacred Torc.

With Estrella closing in across two worlds, Daniel must learn a new spell-language fast, decide who to trust, and protect the one person who won't leave his side: his sister.
